Is Twerk REALLY a word?

I just posted this rant on Facebook but wanted to say a bit more.

I just read a list of “words” added to the Oxford dictionary and many of them are not words but abbreviations or modified words from people being to lazy to say or spell the whole word. REALLY??

New-words

Things such as apols is now a word meaning apologies which I think probably needs to be said after all of the rants of Ms. Miley Twerking (dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance.) all over the stage at the VMA’s (which I did not watch) or grats for congratulations (which I’ll say to those who also chose not to watch LOL).

These have me saying srsly (which is a new word meaning seriously) now a couple are cute like dappy which means silly, disorganized, or lacking concentration (think I’ve been that before) or selfie which means a self taken photograph (which I’ve never done successfully}.

BYOD is a common acronym these days which means bring your own device, generally your own tablet, smartphone, or laptop, to use at work.

For the most part I think adding these to our vocabulary is “derp” (speech regarded as meaningless or stupid, or to comment on a foolish or stupid action). Borrowing from an ESPN segment all I can say is “come on man!”
