When Was the Last Time You Worked ON Your Business?

We get so busy working in our business that we often forget or don’t make time to work on it. Recently I forced myself, in a way, to make drastic changes.

Over the past 6 months or so I’ve been documenting what and where I’ve been spending. You always tell yourself you have a handle on things but then realize you really don’t so I decided when a subscription email came through I would open up a spreadsheet that I started and write down what the product was, how much, and the interval (monthly, annually) of the subscription.

Now because I tend to distract myself, I left it there to take action later so that I can focus on the task at hand. It was this exercise that made me take action. One of the emails that came in was regarding a price change in my autoresponder service. The rates were raising to a price I decided was more than I wanted to pay.

Now the next step was kind of rational. I actually just exported my lists, imported it to the new service (Flodesk) and closed the account.  All of my previous workflows, funnels, or whatever you call them were GONE!

Here’s my thinking: I've been using this service for a very long time. Many of the follow ups I’ve not looked at in years! Were they still converting? Did the links in the emails even work anymore? Renewal on the service was coming up again and I just decided to bite the bullet

I figured many of those were stale, not needed, or were for projects I was no longer doing. Time to refresh.

One of the first to update was changing my opt-in on the main page of this site from 2 free checklists to a lead generation / information product I had created a little over a year ago titled “Unlocking Website Profits”. While I do sell this on Amazon - felt that it gave more value and authority than a simple checklist. After all, I did create it to generate leads, so it only made sense.

Free book opt-in

Here’s where most people stop. After the opt-in the visitor does go to a thank you page to pick up the digital version of this book. On this page I provide a PDF and ePub version of the book and also offer a link to the book on Amazon in case they decide they want a version to have on their desk for notes and highlighting. I also provide instructions on how they can send the digital version to their Kindle or Apple Books. I mean, after all I do want them to consume the book.

Speaking of which is the next step that many do not implement. I created a workflow that has a welcome message email that directs them back to the download page and remind them of the instructions. After a few days I follow up with another email pointing out a key chapter. I do this several times over a few weeks with the final email explaining that if they’re facing overwhelm or challenges how we can work together.

One final things this exercise made me aware of is that my initial design was wrong! Yes, I to make mistakes LOL. I have a ribbon style opt-in and it was below the bottom edge of the screen out of site. Remember I’ve said in the past, you have 2-3 seconds to catch someone's attention. And with the free book giveaway being out of site, they may not see it. I do need to go back and restructure this for mobile as it isn’t on the first screen on a phone at the moment.

If you want to see the page I’m talking about just visit the main page of this website and take a peak for yourself. Opt-in if you like to use my emails as a case study or add it to your swipe file. Maybe even enjoy the book 😉
