Don’t Be A Lazy Marketer

I have to confess, I’ve fallen prey to this myself. Yes, I’m saying I’ve been a lazy marketer sad to say.

We get so wrapped up in our day to day business and personal lives that it’s hard to check all of the boxes but it’s important to make sure you do some sort of marketing daily.

If not actual marketing checking on marketing campaigns and strategies.

Everyone has their own ideas of what works for them but the key is to be sure that you are actively marketing.

Myself I’ve been trying to do some “pre-marketing” followed by a marketing task. By this I mean I go through this thought process.

  • What marketing task am I going to do today?
  • What product or service will I focus on?
  • When the marketing “trigger” happens what will the visitor see?
  • Is this the right process in place?
  • Are the results trackable?

What Marketing Task Today?

This can be a number of things such as a blog post that I re-purpose or share on social media and boost the post? Making sure to cover Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, etc.

Many times if we remember to blog post we rely just on the automated ping list to distribute but I don’t think that is enough anymore. Where I fail on the blog list is due to time restraints I just blog what’s on my mind. I don’t do the keyword research and tune the title and blog post to keyword rich content. That is something I would like to build on very soon.

Some other marketing tasks could be an email to your list, starting an ad campaign. Creating a checklist or report to market etc.

What Product Or Service To Focus On?

Many of us today are full of ideas and have become serial entrepreneurs so we need to give each idea fair shares of our time and marketing. But even if you only have one product or service there are still different areas you can focus on such as lead building, customer follow-up etc. In my case I do have MANY products but for the most part they are satellite products that encompass the principle of building your business.

What Will Happen When Triggered?

Too many times I see this as a failing point. We jump the gun and assume all is working as planned and marketing dollars are lost. Time IS important but so is that marketing dollar.

Before running and add or sending an email make sure that the result you are hoping for actually works. So many times I’ve clicked on an add or filled out an opt-in form that I received a letter about and had nothing to do with what was promised. Or the process was just broke.

Is The Right Process In Place?

I’ve seen this from both small and large business. This happened recently from a national promotion for a company in a magazine where they directed you to a URL on a special website only to go there and the site wasn’t live yet. Or the form didn’t work or even worse the promotion had expired and they didn’t do anything to go ahead and capture a lead or redirect to someplace else.

Be sure to follow take just a moment extra and follow the process through before launching the promotion.

Are The Results Track-able?

You can’t improve on the process if you don’t measure the results. Either link tracking, google analytics, or even the stats with your hosting. Make sure you have some way to track if someone took action and if they did do you have a follow-up process in place as mentioned above.

The key thing to remember is that with the fast paced eCommerce world we live in today you have to stay on your toes. Marketing methods are changing daily. Things happen way to quickly, days go buy way to fast. Don’t get lazy and get lost in the shuffle and then wonder why you aren’t making the money you had hoped.

If you are unsure where to start and just need some focus I do offer consultations and coaching as well as website reviews. Not only will I look over the design of the site I’ll check out the visible systems to see what is working and not. Just check out my Working With Frank page for details.

I hope you found this post useful and has sparked as a reminder and don’t become a lazy marketer.
