Podcast Question

Fotolia 43148809 XSI’ve been listening to podcasts off and on for several years some I listen to more than others and I’m seeing more and more of my friends, mentors and clients starting their own podcast shows.

I have a question for you about podcasts but first I must explain what a podcast is for those who may be visiting this post and are unsure exactly what a podcast is. A podcast is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio, video, subscribed to and downloaded through web syndication or streamed online to a computer or mobile device. The word is derived from “broadcast” and “pod” from the success of the iPod, as podcasts are often listened to on portable media players. I think it’s easiest to think of a podcast as a mini radio or tv show.

Podcasts can be for informational or entertainment purposes.

Some of the podcast shows I listen to (or watch) are:

Now these are just SOME of the ones subscribe to but these are the ones that I’ve listened to regularly.

Some things I really like about podcasts are the fact that they’reasonably short usually 30 minutes are so and fresh content. Of course I get irritated a bit to find a podcast subscribe to it for a while and it disappears after a few episodes. (That happens many times to me on TV shows as well though too.)

I’m curious of a few things:
Do you listen to Podcasts?
What are some you like to listen to and why?
What do you look for in a Podcast?

If I were to start a podcast on web strategies, marketing, design, products I use or know about and possibly Q&A would this be of interest to you? Would there be anything additional you’d like to hear about from me?

I look forward to your input – just post it in the comment section below.

    Frank,

We also listen to a few podcasts. In fact I am in the process of starting one of my own. When I am looking at a new podcast I look for clear sound, the main person to have an easy to listen to voice, the show to have a place I can go to get any links or resources mentioned during the show (so I don’t have to try and write them down while listening, since I am usually listening in my car while driving), and a topic that interests me.

A couple we listen to are:
    Internet Business Mastery: http://InternetBusinessMastery.com
The Rise To The Top: http://therisetothetop.com
    Armand Morin’s 🙂
And my business partner’s – Driving Your Marketing: http://DrivingYourMarketing

There are a couple of others too, but I can’t remember their names off the top of my head 🙂

As far as content I like, I love it when podcasters share resources, tools they use in their business and why, little known tools and sites that help do some of those cool little things we all need done. I will keep listening just hoping they give me another cool tool or site. 🙂

    Great post (and great questions),
    Cindy

Cindy, as always good information. You’ll have to let me know when you launch your podcast I’m sure it will be great. I didn’t think about it much but you’ve outlined exactly what to look for in a “Good” podcast.

I like that in content as well. One of them I like the format the best right now is Ray Edwards – you can tell he has done radio in the past, sound quality is awesome so is the delivery but more than that the content is always very good.

I’m trying to figure out the elements I want for mine not just here’s today’s content good day. It’s important to keep a “template” or format that listeners appeal to. Growing up I remeber listening to the Paul Harvey radio segments and always enjoyed certain elements that still stick with me. Like “Stand By for News” or the classic, ….and now you know the REST of the story.

I think having “memorable” elements will create longevity with your listeners. Just my two cents anyway. Again Cindy always enjoy your feedback.

Great topic, Frank. I’ve been podcasting for several years now, and in January of 2012 I started a weekly podcast (http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast//id494678649). This has increased my business in a variety of ways, including:

    *increasing my traffic substantially
*connecting me with more JV partners
*teaching me about topics I was not familiar with

I post each podcast on my blog, so the traffic there has increased as well.

If you start a podcast, I will definitely subscribe!

Connie, That’s good to know – I didn’t realize you had started your own podcast I’ll have to listen.

Are there podcasts that you listen to that you model yours after? Or ones that you like?

    Frank,

I would have to say that I was inspired by Denise Wakeman’s Online Visibility Secrets podcast (http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/online-visibility-secrets/id339899117?mt=2). Denise has been hosting her show for three years now.

Please start a podcast. I believe you have a lot to say. Yes, I’d be very interested in reading it.
